Therapist in Boston, MA and Brookline, MA

You're the one who always figures things out, so it's disorienting to face a challenge that doesn't respond to hard work, logic, or careful planning.

Whether you're adjusting to a big life change or suffering with grief, anxiety, or a traumatic experience, we work together to help you feel steadier and more empowered.

Through it all, you're not alone.

Meet Elizabeth Apkin, Psy.D.

She/Her

I'm a doctoral-level clinician treating adults in person in the Boston area (Brookline) and across Massachusetts & Virginia by telehealth. I work with adults of all genders and across the queer spectrum, including trans and nonbinary folks.

In therapy with me, you don’t have to sugarcoat it or worry about saying the wrong thing. I handle what you share with care, find light spots in the dark moments, and follow wherever your mind wanders.

Our sessions can be a bit like the introduction to a recipe blog. Sure, you can always skip to the instructions, but I want to see where your brain and narrative take us first.

Maybe we start with the ingredients for a lasagna and end up talking about the bright red hue of a tomato you once found at a local market and the conversation you had with the farmer who grew it.

Your life isn't a lasagna recipe, and we aren’t talking about real tomatoes here, but my point is that our time together is space for you to think out loud and get vulnerable without rushing to the point.

A detour is often where the reasons behind your reactions become clear, and change becomes possible.

Modalities and Orientations

I use a blend of approaches in my practice, including:
  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
  • ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention)
  • Humanistic therapy
  • Psychodynamic therapy

ACT and CBT help you align your life with what you value and shift the patterns getting in the way. ERP faces OCD and specific fears in small, structured steps. Humanistic and psychodynamic approaches mean that I see you as an inherently good, whole person whose present makes more sense once we understand the past.

Why work with Elizabeth Apkin, Psy.D.

We might be a good match if any of this sounds like you, or like the kind of therapist you've been looking for and haven't found yet.

Elizabeth Apkin, a therapist in Boston, stands behind a gray couch in a bright, welcoming room with leafy plants and soft blue pillows.

You want a therapist who can keep up with you

I'm a doctoral-level clinician, which means that I have years of specialized training. If you've worked with a therapist before and felt that they couldn't meet the intensity of your situation, I have extensive experience with complex mental health challenges.

You're successful, yet something still isn’t right

You've worked hard for the life you have, and you're used to effort paying off, but there are key pieces that feel stuck, missing, or broken. It can be difficult to admit that you need help because everything looks great on the outside.

You’re looking for someone who gets high achievers

You've probably learned to keep your guard up, but therapy is where I can help you lower it. I create a safe space to be vulnerable, increase your tolerance for uncertainty, and help you feel more effective at managing the challenges.

You prefer the choice of in-person or virtual

I see clients in person at my Brookline office, just outside Boston, and virtually anywhere in Massachusetts or Virginia, so you can choose what works best for you.

I recommend her without reservation.”

ACT, ERP, and CBT Therapist in Boston

You’re not looking for a therapist who just tells you to relax, exercise, and get more fresh air.

You want a doctorate-level clinician who understands the rush of setting a high bar and clearing it, and who can still help you speak to yourself more kindly, feel lighter, and manage life’s stressors better.

Someone you can talk to openly about depression, life transitions, the grip of OCD, or the strange mix of grief, love, and ambition that can come with fertility, loss, or adjusting to a new baby.

FAQs

How much does therapy in Boston and Brookline cost?

The first appointment is $300 for 60 minutes. After that, we’ll meet regularly for your ongoing therapy sessions, which are $275 for 50 to 55 minutes. I accept cash, check, and all major credit cards, including HSA cards.

Do you take insurance?

I'm an out-of-network provider for most major insurance carriers. The one exception is UnitedHealthcare Student Resources, which I'm in-network with for Boston College and Tufts University students.

Many plans reimburse a portion of out-of-network mental health care, and I'll give you the paperwork you need to submit for reimbursement. I've also partnered with Mentaya, a tool that checks your out-of-network benefits so you can see what you'd get back before you begin your sessions.

Where is your therapy office?

My office is at 1577 Beacon Street, Suite D, in Brookline, MA, just outside Boston. It's a calm and dedicated therapy space with lots of windows.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. I see clients virtually by telehealth anywhere in Massachusetts and Virginia.

What are your credentials?

I'm a licensed psychologist in Massachusetts with a doctorate in clinical psychology (Psy.D.). I'm also Perinatal Mental Health Certified (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International and hold a certificate in rape crisis counseling from the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.

Who do you work with?

I work with adults of all genders, including men, women, and trans and nonbinary folks, across a range of concerns: perinatal mental health, infertility and loss, trauma, OCD, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. Many of my clients are driven, capable people, with a part of life that feels stuck, missing, or hard. I often work with women, but I also regularly work with men who appreciate my supportive yet direct approach.

How do we get started?

The first step is a 20-minute phone consultation to see whether we're a good fit. You can reach out through my contact page, and we'll find a time to talk.
